Happy New Year To Everyone!
Now that the new Constitution is being implemented, we must now also set our focus on the issue of selecting future leaders in the senate, the lower house and the Presidency.
Since the rise of multi party in Kenya, we have seen the idea of primaries being raised to select new Leaders. However, the ideas have never been fully implemented and have not given prospective Leaders opportunity to step up and be counted.
Here are my suggestions:
If a party would like to be seen democratic they have to implement the basic principals of a primary.
- To support a candidate who represents the interests of the party
- To select the most popular candidate who can be elected to office
- To pull the resources of the party to support a candidate to ensure his/her success.
- Let the people decide.
If all the political parties would follow these four basic principals, it would eliminate the situations where we see the same faces vying for the Presidency each election year.
We need seasoned politicians, but we are tired of the same old faces running for the Presidency. We need change and that change can only take place if we support and give chance to other politicians who are more than capable of leading our nation in the right economic and political progress.
If we are to see new prospective Presidential candidates, political parties have to change the way they do business. This might take some time, but sometimes change requires sacrifice of greed and negative self interest.
We need to regain the spirit of Harambee! When we put our ideas and energy together for the good of the community, we progress faster.
Lets make Kenya a progressive nation, a nation ready to embrace/face the future and not scared of the future. We cannot forget the past but we cannot continue living in the past.
Happy New Year.
