We need a powerful presidential office but with checks and balances to stop the holder of the office turning into a tyrant or prevent any individual or group from taking absolute power.
Accordingly the President of the Republic of Kenya should be:
- The Head of State and Head of Government
- The highest political official in the republic and by influence and recognition
- The President should lead the executive branch of the government
- His role is to execute the law as created by the Parliament, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya.
- The President should be the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and enumerates powers specifically granted to the President, including the power to sign into law or veto bills passed by both houses of the Parliament.
- The President should have the power to create a cabinet of advisers and to grant pardons or reprieves.
- With the “advice and consent” of the Senate, the President should be empowered to make treaties and appoint Government officers, ambassadors and judges, including Justices of the Supreme Court.
- The President should have a maximum of two terms each of four years period.
- The President should be directly elected by the electorate
- In the event of a deadlock in the presidential election, the House of Representatives would vote to decide the victor. If there is a deadlock in the House of Representative, both chambers, the Senate and the House of Representative would have to vote to decide the winner of the election.
I shall leave the rest for others to add their opinions and logic.

GOOD IDEAS, ELIMINATE THE PRIME MINISTER POSITION AND GIVE PARLIAMENT SOME OF THOSE POWERS THAT THE PRESIDENT IS LIKELY TO ABUSE.
